Jin Jun Mei
- Jin (金, Gold) refers to the abundant golden tips found in the dry leaves as well as the bright golden hue of the tea liquor.
- Jun (骏, Fine Steed) symbolizes the tea’s remarkable quality and its swift rise to prominence, much like a powerful horse galloping across the open plains.
- Mei (眉, Eyebrow) describes the tea’s slender, tightly twisted buds, whose shape resembles an eyebrow.
To fill a gap in China’s high-end black tea market, the Zheng Shan Tang team created Jin Jun Mei in 2005—a premium black tea designed to meet the evolving tastes of modern tea connoisseurs.
Breaking away from the traditional practice of using mature leaves for black tea production, the tea makers selected only the tender spring buds from high-mountain tea plants growing within the protected forests of the Wuyi Mountain Nature Reserve.
Unlike most black teas, which are made from leaves that can be harvested around the year, Jin Jun Mei is crafted exclusively from the delicate buds picked during the brief early spring harvest. These buds appear only once a year, making the tea exceptionally rare and costly to produce.
Do you know how many fresh spring tea buds are needed to produce just 500 grams of finished Jin Jun Mei? The answer is approximately 80,000 to 100,000 carefully hand-picked buds. Combined with the short harvest season and strict selection standards, this results in a naturally limited annual production.
The tea is crafted using traditional black tea techniques, including withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying. Building upon the heritage of traditional black tea craftsmanship, Jin Jun Mei incorporates innovative refinements to create its own distinctive production methods. The oxidation process is meticulously controlled to preserve the delicate character of the young buds, allowing the tea’s natural sweetness, floral complexity, and layered aromas to fully unfold.

Since its introduction, Jin Jun Mei has become China’s most prestigious black teas. Celebrated for its elegance, natural sweetness, refined aroma, and extraordinary craftsmanship, it has redefined the standards of premium Chinese black tea and inspired a new generation of bud-only black teas.
