Chuanlu is homophonic to "Chuanlu"传胪, and "lu"胪 means display. After the imperial examination, the ceremony in which the emperor announces the rank of Jinshi is called Chuanlu. It means to call by name in turn and enter the palace to meet the emperor. Its system began in the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, the first place in the imperial examination was called Huiyuan, and the first place in the second-level and third-level classes was called Chuanlu. In the Qing Dynasty, the first place in the second-level class (the fourth place in the palace examination) was called Chuanlu.
Since the rise of purple clay teapots, it has been an elegant plaything of the scholar-bureaucrats. The literati chose the name of the pot as Chuan Lu and attached its homophonic pronunciation to the palm-sized pot as a metaphor for their ideals of becoming an official. Drinking and reading it not only nourished one's character but also encouraged one's self.
